Hi, I'm Jessie. I'm a stylist.

How can a child feel comfortable in a haircut cape?

A haircut cape is a protective covering that drapes over your child during a salon service to catch loose hairs and keep them off clothes. This helps prevent itchiness from stray hairs. The covering might be a cape, a smock, or a drape.

The stylist usually puts the cape on after your child is seated for the haircut. Sometimes a soft paper neck strip or a clean towel is placed around the neck first. The cape is fastened over this protective layer. It should fit securely but not feel uncomfortably tight around the neck.

People have different levels of sensitivity to touch and textures. A sensation that one child barely notices might feel very intense and unpleasant to another. For some children, details like the texture of the fabric, a seam, or a tag on the cape can be distracting or uncomfortable. The feeling of the cape's weight or how it fits around the shoulders can also be an important factor for them.

When the cut is finished, the stylist removes the cape from around your child. Loose hairs may be brushed away from the neck and shoulders, sometimes using a soft brush or a clean towel. This final step helps prevent leftover hairs from causing irritation.

You can talk with the stylist about the cape before the haircut begins, especially if your child has known sensory sensitivities. It is helpful to ask about the material, how it fastens, or if the fit can be adjusted for comfort. You can also ask if there are alternatives, such as using a different style of covering or a towel instead of a standard cape.

Call the salon if you have questions about your visit or your service. This is general information, not personal instructions. Your stylist can tell you what applies during your child's visit.

Thanks for watching.
