Hello, my name is Dalia Radwan. I'm a cardiac sonographer.
What happens during an echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart. It uses sound waves to make moving pictures of the heart's chambers, valves and blood flow, with no radiation.
You lie on an exam table in a gown, often on your left side. Small sticky patches on the chest track the heartbeat. A sonographer spreads gel on the chest and presses a handheld wand against different spots. Whooshing sounds from blood flow are common. A cardiologist later reviews the images.
Call the office if you have questions about your visit or your care. This is general information, not personal instructions. Your care team can tell you what applies to you.
Thanks for watching.
