Hi, I'm Dr. Brooks. I'm a pediatrician.
What can the doctor hear with that tool?
A stethoscope helps a doctor or nurse hear quiet sounds inside your body. It makes them much louder. The doctor or nurse puts the small, round end on your skin to listen. That part might feel a little cool.
They listen to your heart and lungs by placing the stethoscope on your chest. They often listen on your front and also on your back. Your heart makes a sound with two parts for each beat. The sounds from your lungs are soft when you breathe.
The doctor or nurse might ask you to take a few deep breaths. You breathe in and out while they listen in different spots on your chest and back. They might listen to your tummy, too.
Each sound is a clue about what is happening inside your body. The doctor uses these clues with everything else they learn during your visit.
Thanks for watching!
