Transcript

Hi, I'm Dr. Nowicka, a medical geneticist.

What are genes?

Genes are tiny pieces of DNA, a code inside the cells of your body. Many genes work like instructions for how you grow and how your body works. Genes pass from parents to children, so families often share things like curly hair.

A genetics doctor looks for clues about your genes. They ask your grown-up about your family. You can stand still while they measure you. They look closely at your face, hands and feet. Sometimes they rub a soft swab inside your cheek.

Then the doctor talks with your grown-up about what comes next.

Thanks for watching!
