Hello, my name is Desmond Purnell. I'm a sonographer.
What is a mammogram like?
A mammogram is an x-ray picture of the breast. The visit usually starts with a few health questions and a change into a gown.
A technologist places one breast at a time on a flat plate, and a clear paddle presses down to spread the tissue. The pressure keeps the picture sharp and lowers the radiation needed. It can be uncomfortable for some people, and the paddle lifts after each picture.
Call the office if you have questions about your visit or your care. This is general information, not personal instructions. Your care team can tell you what applies to you.
Thanks for watching.
