Transcript

Hello, my name is Martine Lebrun. I'm a triage nurse.

How does triage decide the order?

Triage is how an emergency department decides who needs care first. During triage, a nurse usually asks about the main problem and checks vital signs, such as blood pressure and pulse.

Each person gets an urgency level, and people are seen by that level rather than by arrival time. Someone who arrives later with a more urgent problem, such as trouble breathing, may be seen first. Nurses may recheck people who are waiting, so the order can change.

Call the hospital if you have questions about your visit or your care. This is general information, not personal instructions. Your care team can tell you what applies to you.

Thanks for watching.
