Hello, my name is Massiel Rosario. I'm a phlebotomist.
Why is there a finger prick or iron check first?
The finger prick checks the red blood cells, which carry oxygen with their iron-rich protein, hemoglobin. Centers check that the level is high enough before each donation.
A staff member cleans a fingertip, pricks it and collects a drop of blood for a small machine to read. Plasma centers often test the same drop for protein. Pulse, blood pressure and temperature are usually checked too. If a level is outside the center's range, the donation may be put off to another day.
Call the office if you have questions about your visit or your care. This is general information, not personal instructions. The staff at your center can tell you what applies to you.
Thanks for watching.
